G̱a̱mksimoon’s first full-length LP “Gyiin Naxnox” (Feeding the Supernatural) led by Gitga’at songwriter Wil Uks Batsga G̱a̱laaw (Jeremy Pahl), is a record that is loud and unrelenting. Sung entirely in Sm’algya̱x (Ts’msyen language), Gyiin Naxnox moves seamlessly between realms both sonically and energetically. Lyrical themes that dig deep into Ts’msyen worldview & culture are supported by blown-out guitar riffs and a punishing rhythm section much akin to early punk rock & doom metal bands of the 70’s and 80’s. Melodically & rhythmically, Gyiin Naxnox continues to showcase the trailblazing ability of Jeremy Pahl to fuse pre-colonial Ts’msyen musical stylings to hard-hitting fuzz rock. This album is a powerful and authentic statement against colonialism rooted heavily in Ts’msyen tradition.
Featured throughout Gyiin Naxnox are clips of field recordings from Sm’algya̱x-speaking Elders of the Ts’msyen community. This illustrates the strength of the Ts’msyen language community as a whole, and pays respect to the people who have continued to pass on their knowledge; a term in Sm’algya̱x called ‘gwilx ya’ansk.’
The rhythm section portion of the trio that makes up G̱a̱mksimoon are Karl Wyssen (bass) and Danny Bell (drums). Additional vocals were recorded by Sarinn Blawatt (Alien Boys), Jessica Rampling (Apples), and fellow You’ve Changed artist Simone Schmidt (Fiver). Ts’msyen elder’s voices heard on Gyiin Naxnox include Darlene Leland, Velma Nelson, Theresa Lowther, and Ellen Mason.
